RawSpiceBar: February, Indian Spices

February 24, 2015 by theunmanlychef

Raw Spice Bar

This is a sponsored post, all thoughts and opinions are my own

RawSpiceBar is a monthly subscription service that works with chefs and spice experts to create amazing blends for their customers. Each month, you get a package that holds about 3 baggies full of different spices that fit into an over arching theme that the folks at RawSpiceBar have chosen that month.

This month, I received Indian spices with a focus on the Punjab region of India. I LOVE Indian food, it’s rich and delicious. It kind of reminds me of spicy Iranian food. I am really in love with this subscription, every month when it comes my cooking becomes 10 times better. The quality of these spices is so high, it makes such a difference in all of my dishes.

This month they sent: Punjabi Garam Masala, Tandoori Spices, Rose & Chai Spices

Punjabi Garam Masala: So Garam Masala is a spice blend that is found in numerous Indian dishes. There are probably a zillion kinds of blends of this spice, but the blend that they sent me was awesome. It has coriander, cumin, tej patta, kashmiri chiles, arbol chiles, green cardamom, black cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, black pepper corn, ginger, and nutmeg. These spices are perfect for Chicken Tikka Masala.

Tandoori Spices: This is a spice blend that is popular in Northern India. It’s typically found in marinades for chicken, lamb, or seafood. It has a spicy aromatic kick that is perfect for a barbecue. I used these for a future post, I made Mutter Paneer and it gave my sauce the perfect kick and flavor it needed.

Rose & Chai Spices: Tea in many parts of Asia is called Chai. It’s derived from the Mandarin word Cha, typically in India and Iran they blend their regular black tea with an arrangement of floral spices that give the tea an amazing aromatic feel. My mom always blends her teas with ground up cardamom and other spices. In this spice blend, I received rose buds, cardamom, ginger, black tea, cloves, nutmeg, black peppercorn, and fennel. It has a magical smell and would go great with some black tea. They recommend making a shortbread with these spices and I highly recommend trying that.

Overall this month’s spice blend was a huge hit. I can’t recommend trying this subscription enough, it’s so fun and cheap. For $6.00 I could buy a sandwich, or I could get a sweet box of spices! I pick spices people.
