Cinnamon Apple Chips
Dried fruit is literally one of the oldest fruits around. People have been drying and preserving fruits since literally 4,000 B.C. Back then people would use the sun to dehydrate everything from dates to plums. Basically if you could eat it, you could dry it. Or at least they would try to dry it.
When you dry fruit, all of the water that is in the fruit is sucked out and that process brings out the natural sweetness of the fruit. For ancient peoples or basically peoples before refrigeration, preserving fruits meant getting vital nutrients during seasons where it may have not been possible. In Persian culture, dried fruit is a mainstay, every time a family member would come back from Iran they would bring a gigantic bag of dried figs, apples, raisins, and persimmons. As a kid, this meant, uhhh running away and hiding because what kid really wants dried fruit. I mean really. Say raisins to a child, and you might as well have just told them that Santa Claus is dead and that birthdays are cancelled forever.
*If you’re child likes raisins, then well, you’ve done a damn good job parenting. Well done.*
Fast forward to today and dried fruits are kind of coming back. With all the new fangled dehydrators and infusions, dried fruits are becoming cool again. Or well as cool as they can possibly be. Just try dried strawberry infused rhubarb, and you’ll know what I mean.
That leads us to today’s post. Cinnamon Apple Chips, as a kid I never got to try these but the other kids always had these. They were always a fun treat to try. These are fairly low calorie, sweet, and delicious. It’s a cheap snack that you can make for your kids ahead of time and pack in their lunches. A touch of sugar and some cinnamon creates a refreshing snack that breaks you out of the monotony of raisins, apricots, or dates.
This recipe is painfully easy. All you really need is a dehydrator. If you don’t have one you can probably use your oven, but I’m not a oven drying wizard. I own a dehydrator, I recommend you get one, it’s easy and fairly cheap. This is the kind I use and it’s great: Nesco American Harvest FD-61WHC Snackmaster Express Food Dehydrator All-In-One Kit with Jerky Gun
Recipe – Cinnamon Apple Chips
Ingredients
Apples
1 Tbsp. Cinnamon Sugar
Method
You can opt to peel your chips, it makes for a tastier chip, but less healthy. You can use as many apples as you want.
Cut the apple pieces very thin, the thinner the better honestly. The thinner they are the more crunchy and chip like they will get. The thicker the apple the more the apple will taste like a chewy tire.
Depending on how many apples you are making, lay your apples on your dehydrator tray, one at a time. Each time, you will lightly dust them with cinnamon sugar. Not too much.
Once all of your apples are prepped and dusted, put your dehydrator cover on them and set at the fruit temp. Cook for 5 to 6 hours, your house will smell like apples. You’re welcome.
Try not to pull them out too soon, they wont be as crunchy.
Enjoy!
