Dine Out For Life

When you have to support your family or if you live paycheck to paycheck the last thing you can afford is to get sick. And you really cannot afford to get a life changing illness like HIV/AIDS or cancer.

I can’t begin to imagine the stress of trying to support a family while trying to pay for HIV drugs or to have to endure gut wrenching chemotherapy.  I’ll be the first one to admit that when you think of the challenges a serious illness poses, the financial or familial challenges are not always the first thing that come to mind. I’ve always thought to myself, just beat illness X and you’ll be good to go. But it’s usually not that simple.

If you have to beat illness X, but illness X costs 10,000 dollars to treat, you have to pay for your kids school which costs Y, and oh by the way you need to pay for some place to live. OH and you need to make your meals or have someone make them for you, which costs Z.

Aside from all the letters you know owe (haha), you’re stressed out of your mind. Luckily there are some charitable organizations out there, who can help ease the burden, Moveable Feast is one such organization.

Moveable Feast provides healthy meals and other services to folks who are sick and don’t have the economic means to help themselves. They believe that food = medicine, and that no one should have to fight their illness alone.

Moveable Feast does awesome things like:

– Home Delivered Meals

– Sheltered Delivered Meals

– Nutrition Counseling

– Medical Transportation

– Culinary Training

All of the awesome things listed above are free of charge, there is no cost to their clients or students who participate in any of their programs. How is this possible? It is through events like Dining Out For Life, that Moveable Feast is able to continue to provide all of these services for free. Now in its 22nd year, Dining Out For Life is an annual fundraising event hosted by HIV/AIDS service organizations. The premise of the event is simple; Moveable Feast will receive a percentage (at least 25%) of every participating restaurants bill for breakfast, lunch, or dinner (depending on the restaurant) on September 17th.

So where do you come in? All you have to do is eat out. That’s it.

Well sort of, eat out at one of the participating restaurants. This list of restaurants is basically a Who’s Who of the top restaurants in Baltimore. Places like Food Market, The Brewers Art, and Jack’s Bistro are all participating.
