Smaltimore in Canton, is a bar that serves up sushi and burgers.
Let’s dissect that statement.
Smaltimore- a slogan used by Baltimore residents due to the small world feeling you get when you live in Baltimore. Why? Because literally everyone you know from High School or College moves there it seems, so basically you say, “Smaltimore” when you either see someone you know or you see someone familiar in town.
Canton – A neighborhood in said Baltimore that has attracted a “Bro” vibe over the years, it tends to be safer than other parts of town and is more user friendly (no complaints from me). It has a large demographic of 23-36 year olds (although not hipsters, see “Bro”) living out their urban dreams prior to the inevitable flight back to the suburbs following the birth of 2.5 children.
Bar that serves sushi & burgers – I got nothing. Literally nothing about that makes sense, other than the fact that bar patrons when properly sauced probably say, “I WOULD LOVE a burger” or “I would LOVE some sushi right now.”
Smaltimore which sits on a quiet neighborhood corner near the Can Company in Canton, serves up a tasty combination of food while creating an atmosphere that is laid-back and welcoming. When you walk into Smaltimore you can either sit at the bar or seat yourself at one of the empty tables, it tends to get crowded so if you’re going for food going later or earlier is probably better than going at a prime drinking hour.
The menu has a wide array of burgers and sushi. Let’s talk burgers first.
You can pretty much get your burger anyway you want it, they make a mock-Big Mac which is meh, but I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the Maryland Burger or whatever it’s called. Basically it’s a bacon cheeseburger with crab dip on it and it’s heavenly. They serve it on a potato bread roll which brings together the entire burger perfectly. I could literally eat it every time.
They have a nice offering of appetizers for you to choose from, ranging from tater tots (and other suped up tots), waffle fries (Very good), mac & cheese (not good), and other stuff like wings & chicken tenders. The tots are delicious, they’re not splitting the atom by making some sort of new-aged tot, they’re taking your favorite tater tot variety and topping them with delicious treats like crab dip, cheese, and bacon. The waffle fries are similar to the Chick-Fil-A kind, but better in my opinion, slightly more crispy and better flavor.
The Mac and cheese though, is awful, don’t get it. It’s just ziti with a watery cream sauce that lacks any flavor or cheesiness. I would rather have Easy-Mac.
Overall, Smaltimore is a great spot to meet up with friends after drinks, before drinks, or for drinks. It’s just a great spot, aside from their meh mock Big Mac and mac & cheese abomination, their food is very stellar. I have on good authority from a close associate that their sushi is also pretty delicious. The pricing at Smaltimore is reasonable, parking can be a pain so park at the Can Company or find on-street parking somewhere nearby.
